"In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." - Dwight D. Eisenhower
You're probably a prepper. Seriously.
National Geographic ran a show called Doomsday Preppers that really gave preppers a bad name. Prior to the show many people didn't know what prepping was. Unfortunately, prepping is now associated with the extremists that are planning for world end scenarios. This may accurately depict some preppers, but it's far from the norm.
So what is prepping? Simply put it's planning for uncertainty. It's making decisions based on an individual's unique circumstances and beliefs such that they are ready to respond. It's a belief in self reliance.
You're probably a prepper. Do you have any insurance above and beyond that which is required? Do you have a spare tire, jumper cables or maybe a can of tire inflater in your car? Do you leave an umbrella in your car or take one when there is a chance of rain? Do you keep fire extinguisher in your home? Is your home equipped with a home security system? Do you have spare light bulbs? More than a days worth of food on hand? Maybe an extra tube of toothpaste, deodorant, or soap? Perhaps an extra roll of toilet paper in reach? Maybe you even have a gun or mace for self defense? It would be easy to go on and on, but you get the point.
I'm guessing that one or more of these items apply to you. Probably more. If not then there are probably similar items that do. That's okay.
I consider myself a prepper. I'm not necessarily preparing for a zombie apocalypse, the collapse of the stock market, nuclear war, a global oil crisis, or invasion from another country, but I'm a prepper nonetheless. We prep because we want to feel safe or comfortable when a situation falls outside of the norm. Let's be honest. Things falling outside of the norm is the norm. We know that so we prep. Not prepping would be careless.
When you encounter the word prepper please don't think of it negatively. You may not agree with the situation that an individual is preparing for, but you're probably not that different.
Live and let live.
