I first heard about the concept of the "New Rich" from a book titled, the 4-Hour Work Week. It's a great book that I highly recommend. There are pieces that may be a little too radical for some, but the overarching theme is solid and inspiring.
The author, Timothy Ferris, defines the rich not in terms of wealth, but in terms of freedom in one's lifestyle. The new rich travel and emphasize quality of life over the social norms that come with the 9-5 rat race. Ferris argues that what most people really want isn't the millions of dollars in the bank. What they really want is the freedom that it allows. He advocates for taking multiple "mini retirements" throughout your life rather than banking your money for a retirement that may or may not actually come.
How many times have you heard (or said)... when I get (a new job, more money, a bigger house, the kids are out of school, a new car, etc etc etc) then I'll be happy. I'm certainly guilty. As I mentioned in another post, we buy into these illusions and prolong doing what we really want to. What if you already had everything you need? What if you could live the life you always dreamed of today?
Many people think that such a life is out of reach. Admittedly it's far more difficult for someone with a family to just up and travel or quit a job, but that doesn't mean there are bits and pieces that can be integrated into your life today. I certainly don't advocate being careless, but I do challenge you to think about where you can make changes. Anyone who says they can't is lying to themselves. Don't wait.
I don't claim to have it all figured out. I'm constantly trying to improve it, but I think I'm moving in the right direction. My family and I are able to take several trips a year and find ourselves looking less and less for happiness in the traditional places. The journey is far from over, but I'm pleased with where we are headed.
